Artist Statement
As a mixed media artist, I aim to transform ordinary objects into subjects that are spiritual, nature-based, topical or ecological. My work is informed by the cycles of nature and archetypes that are shared across cultures. I use both novel and traditional materials such as recovered and found objects, encaustic, photography, and printmaking to layer image and meaning into assemblages, collages, one-of-a-kind pieces, monotypes and installations. For this exhibition I focused on integrating the historical and contemporary roles of women into encaustic sculptures called the “Caryatids, Light Carriers.”
Bio
Margaret Rose has lived in Lawrence Kansas since 1971, exhibiting regionally and internationally for over 40 years. She has travelled to workshops in the US and Spain to hone her skills in encaustic and printmaking. Her BFA from The University of Kansas is in Design, so design elements and composition are integral to her work. She also has a Master’s degree in Art Education and taught Art in public schools for 39 years. She says, “Qui docet discit-- who teaches, learns, and I learned so much!” Since retiring in 2016, she has continued to make Art, showing in exhibits about every two years. “I’m inspired by Art, history, nature, color and design in the garden as well as reflection and meditation.”
